Battle of the Brands

I was doing some research on the Internet about fast food brands in Iran and I came across an article on NPR's website which mentioned an interview with Holly Degar regarding fake brands you found while visiting Tehran.
I practice law in Iran and other than Tehran, I live and work in Dubai. For the past 10 years I have specialized in intellectual-property field. As you may know, most attorneys in Iran don't actually specialize in anything in particular, but I have made a career from focusing on patent and trademark practice. I represents many foreign brands entering Iran, and as part of my job I also stop and prosecute anyone who is infringing on an Iranian or foreign brand, regardless of their presence in Iran. I worked for a law firm before starting my own practice which also specialized in this matter and in fact, that law firm represented Starbucks in their case against

There is a huge misconception about the power of brands in protecting themselves in Iran. The Patent and Trademark Office of Iran is part of the WIPO and the Madrid Protocol Agreement and there is a specific court that handle these infringement cases. They are fairly knowledgeable about international brands, international best practices and regulations.
If the international brand wants to stop people from misusing their brand, there are laws that will protect them, but it is often the brand that is not interested in pursuing the criminal. There is a serious "Battle of Brands" going on in Iran and we are in the middle of it.
